The film has been planned since 1996 when Ivan Reitman was hired to write and direct. In January 2001 Silver Pictures approached Todd Alcott to write the script. In 2003, Todd was replaced for Laeta Kalogridis. In 2005, Josh Whedon was hired to write and direct, but in February 2007 decided to quit. In November 2014, Michelle MacLaren was confirmed as director, but she decided to drop out in 2015
