Three years have passed since we waved goodbye to the popular E4 series 'How I Met Your Mother'. With over 200 episodes, it could be said that it provided the cast with big potential opportunities in the future due to the longevity and popularity of the series over the years. However, this is not always guaranteed. Not all of the 'How I Met Your Mother' cast have been receiving offers for roles left, right and centre like we all first thought once the series had finished.

The jump to the big screen

All of the actors from the show have tried there hand in the world of cinema, for example the likes of Cobie Smulders has gone down the superheroes route by playing the role of Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Others, such as Neil Patrick Harris has hosted a number of award shows whilst also appearing in a range of productions since the series finished.

So, what has happened to the rest of the cast? We take a look at what they have been up to since the show ended back in 2014. However, one thing is for sure is that we won't be seeing any of them in the spin off of the series, which is funnily enough named 'How I Met Your Dad'.

1 Josh Radnor

radnor

Before 'How I Met Your Mother' finished, actor Josh Radnor took advantage of the demand out there and in 2010 tried his hand as a screenwriter and director for a indy film which he also appeared in, named 'Happythankyoumoreplease'. 3 years later he took on those three roles again for the film 'Liberal Arts'. Since leaving the role of Ted Mosby, Radnor has stuck around working in the cinema industry in productions such as 'The Seeker', but has also dabbled back into TV with the series 'Mercy Street'.

2 Cristin Milioti

Cristin Milioti was the last addition to the 'How I Met Your Mother' cast and whilst having a number of smaller roles in productions, she was not well known by the public. However, she realised her potential thanks to the E4 comedy and after that the offers flooded in. A few months after waving goodbye to her character Tracy, she was part of the series 'A to Z', a romantic comedy which only had one season. Milioti also co-starred in the series 'Fargo' as well as appearing in the 2016 film 'It Had to Be You'. Furthermore, the American actress was part of the cast for 'The Mindy Porject', and more recently she appeared in the film 'Breakable You'.

3 Jason Segel

Jason Segel was one of the actors that took advantage of his appearance in the series before it finished. In the final few years of the series, Segel balanced his work between the show and films such as 'The Muppets', 'This is 40' and 'The Five Year Engagement'. Since then, the actor has been less busy as he appeared in the 2016 film 'The End of the Tour' and more recently the Netflix series named 'The Discovery'.

4 Alyson Hannigan

We haven't seen much of Alyson Hannigan since the end of 'How I Met Your Mother'. In fact, it seems like she is taking things easy. In 2016, she announced her participation in the reboot of 'The First Wives Club' as well as the film 'Do You Take This Man'.

5 Neil Patrick Harris

After playing Barney, it seems like Neil Patrick Harris has taken his foot off the pedal slightly as we haven't seen him in as many productions as we had hoped. Despite this, we have seen him enjoying spending time with his husband David Burtka and their family together. The actor made an appearance in two episodes of the fourth season of 'American Horror Story'. We have, of course, seen him more recently in the Netflix series 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'. Back in 2015, he had his own late night show called 'Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris', which was aired eight times. In 2017, he will appear in the film 'Downsizing'.

6 Cobie Smulders

Since the end of 'How I Met Your Mother', Cobie Smulders hasn't taken her foot off the gas. She waved goodbye to her character Robin and swapped her for the Marvel character Maria Hill in films such as 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' as well as 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'. Furthermore, the Canadian actress has featured in 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back' alongside Tom Cruise, as well as appearing in 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' alongside her colleague from 'How I Met Your Mother' in the form of Neil Patrick Harris.

7 David Henrie

David Henrie had a secondary role in the E4 series, but we saw him grow throughout the series. The actor became known as well for his role in 'Wizard's of Waverley Place'. Whilst appearing in 'How I Met Your Mother', Henrie also made appearances in episodes of 'Arrested Development' and 'Mind Games'. In 2015, he took the leap into the world of cinema and thats where he has been present in the last few years with roles in films such as 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2' and 'Little Boy'.

8 Lyndsy Fonseca

Since finishing 'How I Met Your Mother' finished, actress Lyndsy Fonseca has taken part in a number of new and very different projects. For example, one of her first roles after the series finished was in 'The Escort', the film about a sex addict journalist. Fonseca has also popped up in a number of series such as 'Pitch', 'Agent Carter' and 'Grandfathered'. In 2017, the actress is appearing in films such as 'The Haunted' and 'Curvature'.
