DC Studios CEO James Gunn (who was hired after the film's production) stated that while the film is set in the DC Extended Universe, it is ultimately "disconnected" from the universe. Furthermore, he intended to incorporate Blue Beetle into his upcoming rebooted DC Universe, with Xolo Maridueña reprising his role.

When Nana is flipping through channels, you briefly see a clip from 'Cronos' (1992), the debut feature film of Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. This movie also involves a bug looking mechanical device, though in this case it causes vampirism.
