Plot
'Good News' (굿뉴스 in korean) is a South Korean black comedy directed by Byun Sung-hyun with a screenplay co-written by Byun himself and Lee Jin-seong. The film is inspired by the hijacking of a Japanese passenger plane in March 1970. Produced by Star Platinum, it premieres on the streaming platform Netflix on October 17, 2025, worldwide.
In 1970, a plane taking off from Haneda Airport in Tokyo bound for Fukuoka is hijacked by members of the Red Army Faction, a communist military group that was active between 1968 and 1971. The hijackers, armed with guns and knives, demand to divert the plane to Pyongyang, North Korea.
In Seoul, a mysterious a shadowy member known as "Nobody" is recruited to coordinate a secret operation to stop the hijacking. With the help of intelligence from Japan, the United States, and South Korea itself, they will try the most outrageous tactics to achieve this.
'Good News' stars, among others, Sul Kyung-gu, Hong Kyung, Ryoo Seung-bum, Takayuki Yamada, Shiro Sano, Kippei Shiina, and Kim Sung-oh. The film, shot at Gimpo Airport (Seoul) to simulate Pyongyang, debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival and generally receives good reviews.
