Ari Aster's visual references for his upcoming Scandinavian folk horror are Black Narcissus (1947), Hard to be a God (2013), Macbeth (1971), and Tess (1979).
International cast
The only American actor in the film is William Jackson Harper. The main character, Florence Pugh, is British, while Jack Reynor is Irish (although he was born in Colorado). Will Poulter is British, and all the other supporting actors are Swedish, British, or Hungarian.
Breaking the rules of the genre
Despite the overused resource of using darkness and night scenes in horror movies, 'Midsommar' take place enterely during the day.

Right after the release of the previous Aster's film, 'Hereditary', the production of this new movie was announced.
Pure terror this time
The director Ari Aster tried since the beggining to make 'Hereditary' like more of a family drama so, from his point of view, this should be his first horror movie.
