Not cult, but commune
The directors spent some time deciding how they would call the place where the main characters return, because they didn't think "cult" was an accurate term. In the end, they called it "commune". Days after, Moorhead watched a documentary about cults where one of the people interviewed said: "No, I'm not in a cult, I'm in a commune".
"Saving" the day
The decision for Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead to also act in their film was largely an attempt to keep the budget down.

Directors live in the same building and would rehearse together a lot of times so they could exploit the script to the top.
