The Last Execution

the scientist Franz Walter (Lars Eidinger) joins the GDR's foreign intelligence corps until he achieves his goal: to become a professor at the university. To do so, he must swear absolute loyalty to the system. From then on, he is forced to use his knowledge to carry out practices he does not agree with, such as psychological pressure, surveillance, letters, falsified diagnoses, wiretapping and blackmail. At a certain point, Dr. Walter reaches his limit and decides to change things. The director aims to show the audience how difficult it is for an individual to struggle between good and evil, truth and lies, strength and weakness, and perpetrator and victim.

It was directed by Franziska Stünkel ('Vineta') and the cast includes Lars Eidinger ('Clouds of Sils Maria', 'Perssian Lessons'), Devid Striesow ('The Counterfeiters'), Paula Kalenberg ('Anhedonia'), Mortiz Jahn and Luise Heyer, who appeared in the series 'Dark'. It was filmed in several original locations, including the buildings of the Berlin State Security Service. Most of it was filmed indoors, giving a sense of claustrophobia. At the Munich International Film Festival, it won the award for best screenplay in the New German Cinema category, as well as the One Future Award.
