The film marks Damian Szifron's English language directorial debut.
Origin of the weapon
The 'XM21' was the designation for what became the M21 sniper rifle which was used by the US military until 1988. The weapon itself was later upgraded to the M25 sniper rifle and saw service with the 10th Special Forces Group and Navy Seals.
Title change
The original title 'Misanthrope' means someone who hates or mistrusts humankind. Perhaps the title was changed to keep the audience guessing more about the personality and motives of the killer.
