Sinopsis
‘Hawaii 5-0’ is an American series created by Leonard Freeman and produced by CBS Productions for the CBS network. It aired on television from 1968 to 1980, and became one of the longest-running and most recognizable police dramas of its time, with a total of 12 seasons and 279 episodes.
The series revolves around Hawaii 5-0, a special police department responsible for investigating the most serious crimes occurring in the city of Honolulu, as well as ensuring the safety and calm of its neighborhoods. Unlike other police forces, this unit reports directly to the Governor of Hawaii, which gives it an unusual autonomy within television fiction.
The team is led and directed by the relentless detective Steve McGarrett, played by Jack Lord, a firm, methodical leader with strong moral convictions. McGarrett works closely with local police to maintain peace in the islands, relying on both intuition and the discipline of his elite group.
The department faces all kinds of cases where violence is the main character: murders, kidnappings, espionage networks, organized crime, and even terrorist threats, reflecting the social and political concerns of the United States during the 1970s. Each episode presents a self-contained case that marks the narrative development of the chapter.
The impact of 'Hawaii 5-0' was enormous, both nationally and internationally. The series became an icon of American television thanks to its unmistakable musical theme, its visual style, and its idealized yet tense portrayal of the Hawaiian archipelago. Its success led to constant reruns and, decades later, a reboot premiered in 2010.
The main cast, in addition to Jack Lord, included James MacArthur as Danny “Danno” Williams, Kam Fong Chun as Chin Ho Kelly, Gilbert Lani Kauhi as Kono Kalakaua, and Al Harrington as Ben Kokua, among others. These characters helped build a series that marked a turning point in the television police genre and continues to be a cultural reference of classic television.
