Return to the cinema of Spanish director and screenwriter Ángeles González-Sinde, who had not made any film project as a filmmaker since 2008 with 'Una palabra tuya, a year before becoming Minister of Culture during the socialist government of Spanish prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, position in which she was between 2009 and 2011. The current president of the Royal Board of Trustees of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía returns with 'El comensal', an adaptation of the book of the same name by Gabriela Ybarra.
Icíar (Susana Abaitua) and Fernando (Fernando Oyagüez) are young and are going through the most traumatic experience of their lives: the loss of one of their parents. But they cannot share the pain or the strategies to manage it. They live in different times. Fernando in 1977 in Bilbao faces the kidnapping of his father by ETA. Icíar in 2011 between Navarra and Madrid, to the sudden cancer of his mother Amalia (Adriana Ozores). From this loss, Icíar becomes aware of the tragic kidnapping and murder of his grandfather, whom he never knew, at the hands of ETA in 1977. Given the refusal of his father, Fernando (Ginés García Millán), already mature to talk about the matter , Icíar embarks on his own in a reconstruction of the days of the kidnapping forty years ago. In her effort to bring family memory to light, she and her father will meet again in a new way of looking at the past to live in the future.
