Directed and written by Isao Takahata, 'Pom Poko' was the third feature film from 'Heidi', '3.000 Leagues in Search of Mother' and 'Anne of Green Gables' director in Studio Ghibli, after having been directing 'Grave of the Fireflies' and 'Only Yesterday'. Set in 1966, in full economic and social expansion of Japan, the film tells the fight of the Tanukis (a kind of Japanese raccoon) to defend their territory against the invasion of humans, which destroy their natural habitat to build roads and houses . A chronicle of a losing battle, in which it makes a powerful environmental and environmental claim.

Selected by Japan to represent the country in the category of best Foreign language film in the 67th edition of the Academy Awards, the first animated film to hold this honor.
