Asher's reviews
Media reviews
Chicago Sun-Times
Director Caton-Jones and screenwriter Zaretsky nimbly blend storylines about violence and betrayal within the ranks of Jewish gangsters with the domestic drama, which includes not only the promising but uneasy romance between Asher and Sophie.
The Hollywood Reporter
The film works to some degree thanks to the terrific performance by Perlman, who infuses the title character with a compelling, world-weary gravitas.
New York Times
The performers keep the viewer hoping for the best. Caton-Jones and the cinematographer Denis Crossan aim for autumnal visual texture. Unfortunately the pace is so relaxed as to be meandering and Jay Zaretsky?s screenplay is cliché-packed.
The groundwork was there for a cool and interesting story about an aging assassin; it just wasn't executed properly.
