Plot

''Caravan'' is the debut film of Czech director Zuzana Kirchnerová, an intimate and luminous drama that explores family ties and the search for freedom.

The story follows Ester, a middle-aged single mother who, exhausted by the weight of her routine and caregiving responsibilities, decides to embark on an impromptu escape to southern Italy with her son David, a teenager with intellectual disabilities

What begins as a desperate attempt to escape her daily life transforms into an emotional journey that will test their relationship and her ability to accept her own limits and desires.

During the caravan trip, mother and son traverse landscapes and encounters that alter the way they see each other. The appearance of a young traveler and other characters along the way turns their journey into a discovery experience, where David experiences feelings of independence and affection for the first time, while Ester confronts her frustrations, accumulated fatigue, and guilt for longing for a different life.

With a naturalistic and sensitive tone, the film intertwines the intimate and the social to portray motherhood from an honest and unidealized perspective. Inspired by the director's personal experience, the work reflects on caregiving, identity, and the right to desire something beyond sacrifice.

Amid moments of harshness and others of unexpected lightness, the journey becomes a space of transformation, where the improvised family learns to redefine their limits and to find, amidst uncertainty, a different form of hope and shared freedom.
