Plot
Based on the autobiographical novel by Galician writer Antón Castro, winner of the National Prize for Cultural Journalism, 'Cariñena, Vino del Mar' is Javier Calvo's debut feature. Starring Diego Garisa and Alejandro Bordanove, it is an Aragonese and Galician production. The director has opted for a very personal story that any young person can identify with, depicting the intricacies of the transition to adulthood.
The film tells the story of Antón (Diego Garisa), an 18-year-old young man who flees military service and leaves Galicia, his homeland, behind. He arrives in Zaragoza, joins a group of conscientious objectors, and explores his vocation as a writer. All this while the first throes of Spanish democracy are taking place.
His job search takes him to Cariñena, where he meets Miguel (Alejandro Bordanove), a charming young man with whom he forges a strong friendship. Between barracks and vineyards, a fleeting love for Cris, an idealistic young woman, blossoms. His friendships, which also include Palmira and Isidro, help him grow and understand the world around him.
It's a story about rewriting one's destiny, knowing how to choose, and growing up in a country that's also trying to find itself.
