Plot

Directed by Florián Rey in 1938 at the UFA studios in Berlin, the film was a co-production between Germany and Spain, because the German government had invited Argentine-Spanish actress Imperio Argentina to shoot in Germany, on the occasion of the Spanish Civil War. Shot simultaneously with the German version, 'Andalusische Nächte', which had the same leading actress but completely changed the rest of the cast and the technical team (including the director and screenwriter), the story takes place in the Seville of 1835, in full occupation of Napoleon's France. The gypsy Carmen, the most famous singer in the area, will visit her boyfriend, the bullfighter Antonio Vargas Heredia, to the jail, where he ended up defending her in a brawl. José, a brigadier who guarded the prisoner, is captivated by her beauty and falls in love with her. Carmen decides to take advantage of this love affair to help in her boyfriend's rescue. However, by this decision, José will be degraded, which will make this impeccable brigadier join a group of smugglers to be able to be closer to the attractive gypsy. Between her two lovers, the beautiful Carmen will be the victim of a witch's prediction: the man who loves her will die. Inspired by the novel 'Carmen' by Prosper Mérimée.
