Dead of Winter

'Dead of Winter' is a German-Canadian action thriller filmed in English and directed by Brian Kirk. The screenplay is written by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb. Produced by Stampede Ventures, it premieres in the United States on September 26, 2025, after screening at the Locarno Film Festival.

After the death of her husband, Barb travels to Hilda Lake in northern Minnesota to scatter his ashes, as it is where they had their first date. At the lake, Barb observes how a couple seems to be holding a young woman captive in their cabin. In the midst of a severe storm, Barb begins to investigate and discovers what awaits the girl.

Barb must overcome the bad weather conditions and use her husband's knowledge to try to save the girl. Barb ultimately uncovers the reasons that have led the couple to do what they are doing, while facing situations that could end her own life.

'Dead of Winter' features actress Emma Thompson in the role of Barb, alongside Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca, Lauren Marsden, and Brían F. O'Byrne. Most of the film was shot in the Finnish town of Koli, mainly due to its climate. The film has received generally positive reviews.
