According to Kevin Feige the concept of magic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is inspired by films like 'Matrix' and the fantastic works of Stanley Kubrick and Hayao Miyazaki.

Indian monastery

Benedict Cumberbatch spent his gap year volunteering as an English teacher at a Buddhist monastery in Darjeeling, India. The actor says that he relied on this experience when he prepared for the role of Doctor Strange because this character trained in an oriental monastery.

Vincent Price

The creators of Doctor Strange, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, were inspired by Hollywood actor Vincent Price to build the character. The doctor even bears the middle name Vincent.
