Plot
Martin Joubert (Fabrice Luchini) has never settled for anything in his life, born in Paris, he has always lived in luxury and fortune. Seeking to fulfill the prospects of his life, he voluntarily moved to a small village in Normandy to working on a bakery. Past young ambitions will be accompanied by a great capacity for imagination and passion for literature, being an ardent follower of the books of Gustave Flaubert. Near his home, a young English couple, Gemma Tate (Gemma Arterton) and Charles Bovery (Jason Flemyng), will move. 'This couple will behave like the characters in Flaubert in 'Madame Bovary'. 'Gemma Bovery', directed by Anne Fontaine, is the cinematography adaptation of Posy Simmonds' graphic novel.

While Valerie and Martin lie in bed arguing about the banality of Madame Bovary, Valerie is reading a biography of Francois Mauriac. Mauriacs most famous novel Thérèse Desqueyroux also deals with a bored, unhappy woman in the back province, but this one attempts to poison her husband with arsenic.
Gemma Arterton learned to speak fluent french for the film.
