Marshall's reviews
Media reviews
Roger Ebert
"Although Boseman is 100% credible as a brilliant attorney, especially when Marshall and Friedman are trying to work around the judge's restrictions, his performance as Marshall is not an imitation; nor is it overly concerned with giving us a true psychological portrait of Thurgood Marshall the man. It's more of a classic Hollywood alpha male badass performance, in the vein of Humphrey Bogart, Paul Newman and other 20th century white superstars who reveled in playing sarcastic, sexy, dominerring."
Variety
"The film stands on its own as a compelling courtroom drama, complete with surprising revelations - and while we hope things will go his way, this case could just as easily prove the one that motivated his future crusade"
The New Yorker
"Reginald Hudlin directs this historical drama, set in 1941, with an apt blend of vigor and empathy."
Los Angeles Times
"'Marshall' is unwilling to let us leave the theater without reminding us that these battles are far from over."
The Washington Post
"The case is also remarkable because it?s not stereotypical. This isn't a story populated by evil, racist Southerners and a black plaintiff whose character is beyond reproach. The story takes place in the North where the racism may be subtler, but its no less damaging."
New York Times
"Some biopics go for sweeping and exhaustive, trying to cram an entire life into a tidy two hours or so. ?Marshall? smartly opts for modest. With economy, a bit of gauzy nostalgia and likable performances, it revisits an early episode from the life of Thurgood Marshall, the civil rights lawyer who became the first African-American to hold a seat on the Supreme Court."
The Hollywood Reporter
"Despite its sensationalist aspects, the case doesn't really seem to erupt into the enormous powder keg it might have, so, on its merits, it's doubtful anyone would have detected a film waiting to be made of it were it not for Marshall's involvement. It's interesting enough, but that's not usually sufficient recommendation to get audiences out to a theater."
