Plot
Paris, 1959. While French cinema seems trapped in academic formulas, a group of young critics from Cahiers du Cinéma conspires to blow it up from within. Jean-Luc Godard, the most radical and erratic of them all, manages to raise his first feature film almost by accident: 'Breathless'. Without a closed script, with precarious funding and a small crew, Godard shoots in the streets, stealing shots from the city, disobeying technical and narrative rules that no one had dared to question.
The film becomes a living laboratory: actors improvising, fragmented dialogues, editing jumps that break classical continuity, and a camera that urgently chases the present. Jean-Paul Belmondo embodies a criminal who imitates Bogart without fully understanding him; Jean Seberg, a young woman caught between fascination and distance. Between them, something more than a love story or an escape is filmed: the birth of a new way of seeing.
Surrounding the shoot are François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Rivette, and Agnès Varda, aware that what is happening is not just a film, but a foundational gesture. The premiere shakes the critics, divides the audience, and redefines the possibilities of modern cinema. The Nouvelle Vague thus emerges not as a theoretical manifesto, but as a practice: shoot fast, shoot free, shoot against everything. 'Breathless' not only inaugurates a career, but an aesthetic revolution that will forever change the history of cinema.

Trivia
Black and white
Like French New Wave movies, Richard Linklater chose to shoot this film in black and white, in the Academy ratio, and cast relatively unknown actors, including the lead, Guillaume Marbeck, which was mostly working as a photograph and a model before being cast in the movie.
Zoey Deutch
Zoey Deutch is nearly a decade older when Jean Seberg actually starred in Al final de la escapada (1960). Deutch was 30 years old when Nouvelle Vague (2025) (which chronicles the creation of one of the earliest Nouvelle Vague/New Wave films) was released in 17 May 2025 at Cannes compared to Seberg who was 21 years old when Breathless was released in 1960.
