Plot

In Gus Van Sant's remake of Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece, Anne Heche takes over Janet Leigh's role of Marion Crane, a young secretary who's having an affair with her boss, Sam Loomis, who has troubles paying off a debt and his wife's alimony. One day, a rich client buys a house with $400,000 in cash. Marion steals the money and heads out to California to live her dream life with Loomis. But when she gets lost in a bad storm she stops at the Bates Motel, where the proprietor, Norman Bates (Vince Vaughn), lives a very troubled life with his dominating mother, whom he lives with in their house on the hill next to the motel. A week later, Marion has vanished and no one can find her nor the stolen money, not even Loomis, her sister, Lila (Julianne Moore), or a private detective (William H. Macy) who has been hired to find her and the money. The reason behind this sudden vanishing is a deadly secret that's waiting to be discovered inside the Bates house.

Trivia

Shot by shot

This film is a remake of Hitchcock's greatest film. The motivation behind Gus Van Sant idea on this movie was to pay homage to 'Psycho', from 1960, recreating the film shot by shot, on the purest way possible. Making an identical copy the most orthodox way possible.

More than a copy

Alfred Hitchcock wanted the original 'Psycho', from 1960, to open wiht a long shot, a complete pan and zoom over the city that would focus on Marion's hotel room. Sadly, the technology was not yet perfected, and he achieved his effect through a series of pans and dissolves. The remake does a complete travelling shot, as Hitchcock had intended.
