Renoir

‘'Renoir'’ is a delicate drama directed by Japanese director Chie Hayakawa.

It follows the summer of 1987 in a contrasting Tokyo, where family routine and the intimate tensions of a normal household blend with the echoes of a society in full transformation. 

The protagonist is Fuki (Yui Suzuki), an eleven-year-old girl full of curiosity and sensitivity, caught between her father's terminal illness (Lily Franky), who is battling cancer that consumes him with every passing moment, and a mother (Hikari Ishida) stressed and overwhelmed by work and responsibilities who tries to hold the family together while attempting to digest the impending loss. 

In that emotionally fragile space, Fuki observes without fully understanding the fears and silences of the adults around her: conversations that are interrupted, glances that evade the truth, and absences that weigh more than unspoken words. 

To cope with this mix of loneliness and confusion, the girl takes refuge in her imagination and her fascination with telepathy, a boundary between the real and the intangible that offers her comfort and meaning when adult life seems to crumble around her. 

Through her eyes, the film becomes an intimate and contemplative journey about adolescence, silent pain, resilience, and the need for human connection, where small gestures and inner fantasy reveal more about the family than the conversations themselves. 

''Renoir'' addresses an impressionistic tone that blends memories, fantasy, and reality to explore how a girl tries to find balance between the emotional chaos of her family and her own questions about death and growth. 

It has been celebrated for its deep look at childhood and its delicate portrayal of a moment that forever marks the life of someone on the brink of maturity, uniting pain, imagination, and hope through visual poetry.
