The Sun Is Also a Star

Natasha Kingsley (Yara Shahidi) is a teenage girl fascinated by the sciences and the sheer expansiveness of the universe. Natasha is content with her life in New York City with her parents, Samuel (Gbenga Akinnagbe) and Patricia (Miriam A. Hyman), and her brother, Peter (Jordan Williams), and is devastated when she finds out that she and her family are to be deported to Jamaica the next day. Natasha is determined to do everything in her power to stop this from happening, so she meets his an immigration officer who gives her the card of a lawyer, Jeremy Martinez (John Leguizamo), who can work her case.

On her way home, the subway stalls and Daniel Bae (Charles Melton), a young man of Korean origin interviewing for medical schools at the encouragement of his parents, spots her and feels an instant connection with her. Convinced it's fate, he starts to flirt with her, though Natasha assures him that she finds the idea of fate cheesy and unrealistic, and is more of a practical soul, herself. Nonetheless, the two spend the day together and grow more attracted to each other, but Natasha grows extremely worried when she realises that she almost missed her appointment with Jeremy and she confesses the truth her imminent deportation to Daniel. The two must decide whether it is worth pursuing love when they will be torn apart so soon.

Based on the book of the same name by Nicola Yoon, 'The Sun Is Also a Star' is directed by Ry Russo-Young.
