The film is based upon the novel 'Urfin Jus and his wooden soldiers', second novel published by Soviet author Aleksandr Volkov in 1963 in the 'Magic Land' saga. He translated the first tale taking some liberties and later kept on creating stories based on the book by L. Frank Baum.
