The lack of force in the characterization of some voice and various moments that extend in time without any necessity (a flaw shared by the comic itself) is compensated with some ugly, raw and grotesque drawings (in style of MTV's adult caricatures like 'Bavis and Butt-Head' or 'The Head', characteristic of the 90s decade); a very effective way to tell a human an emotional story.

This being an autobiography, nothing really drastic happens when she and her stoned friends whiz around winding mountain roads at night on their way to some forbidden club or other. Her dream of being a creative, independent woman triumphs over all temptation, offering a positive role model for the film's youthful viewers.

The more adult topics that are touched upon, such as recreational drug use and sexual activity, despite their relatively timid presentation, put the picture outside the realm of kids' film, yet there's not quite enough mature insight to make it a satisfying watch for adults either. The movie's visual pleasures and idiosyncrasies may make for lively animation, but as a narrative film, 'Virus Tropical' feels more like a sketch.

Perhaps unexpectedly, given the introspection of the material, the animation is at its loveliest when the attention of the story shifts focus and draws our gaze momentarily to the nature that surrounds Paola, first in Quito and later in Cali, Colombia.
