Willa and Bill were lovers in the past. Now, after decades apart, they meet again by chance in an airport where they are trapped due to the snow. They only wish to return to their respective homes as soon as possible, but the night will be very long. It will be in this context that the two souls will be drawn to each other again and will be forced to reflect on the relationship they had.

'What Happens Next' is, after 'Ithaca', the second feature film directed by actress Meg Ryan. A star of some of the most popular romantic comedies of the 90s, such as 'When Harry Met Sally', 'Sleepless in Seattle', and 'You've Got Mail', as well as blockbusters like 'Top Gun' and 'City of Angels', she leads the cast of this two-person film, accompanied only by David Duchovny, known primarily for the television series 'The X-Files' and 'Californication', but who has also appeared in films like 'Zoolander' and 'The Bubble'.

Ryan's name is also found, along with Steven Dietz and Kirk Lynn, in a script that adapts the play 'Shooting Star', written by the former.
