Based on the 2010 memoir 'Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison', Piper Kerman's book about the 13 months of a 15-month sentence that she served at a federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut. The show changes Kerman's last name to Chapman.
Uzo Aduba's character was only meant to appear in the first three episodes. After seeing her performances, the writers and producers made her a recurring character.
