Sinopsis
Shameless is a British dramedy created by Paul Abbott and produced by Company Pictures for Channel 4. The series premiered in 2004 and ran for 11 seasons until 2013.
The series focuses on the chaotic life of the Gallaghers, a dysfunctional family led by an alcoholic and irresponsible father, Frank Gallagher (David Threlfall), who has delegated the entire burden of raising the family onto his eldest daughter, Fiona (Anne-Marie Duff). She becomes the true head of the family and must take care of her siblings: Lip (Jody Latham), Ian (Gerard Kearns), Carl (Elliot and Luke Tittensor), Debbie (Rebecca Ryan), and little Liam.
The Gallaghers reside in Manchester, in a fictional social housing complex called Chatsworth Estate. In this environment, economic precariousness is marked and it portrays with rawness and dark humor the ups and downs of both the family and their neighbors.
'Shameless' addresses themes such as alcoholism, poverty, chaotic romantic relationships, unwanted pregnancies, sexual identity issues, crime, and social exclusion.
The cast is completed with very relevant supporting characters such as Veronica Fisher (Maxine Peake) and Kev Ball (Dean Lennox Kelly)
The series was incredibly acclaimed by critics in the UK for its social realism and its ability to combine drama and comedy without sugarcoating the marginality in which its protagonists live.
It had a significant cultural and television impact and won the BAFTA Award for Best Drama Series in 2005. It established itself as a reference for the British working class.
A few years later, in 2011, a successful American adaptation of the same name produced by Showtime emerged, which increased its influence and reaffirmed the idea of it being a cult series.
