Biography
Lydia Bosch is one of those faces woven into the collective memory of several generations of television viewers in Spain. She was born in El Prat de Llobregat, near Barcelona, on 26 November 1963, and her real name is Lydia Boquera de Buen. The stage surname the public knows her by was given to her by Narciso Ibáñez Serrador, the legendary showman known as Chicho. She dreamed of becoming a teacher, studied Public Relations and, at just nineteen, packed her bags for Madrid to try her luck on television.
From hostess to star presenter
Her debut came in 1984 as a hostess on the legendary quiz show 'Un, dos, tres... responda otra vez', the same launch pad that produced so many faces of Spanish television. From there she strung together work as a presenter on popular programmes such as 'El gran juego de la oca', while easing into acting, first in the period drama 'La forja de un rebelde' (1990) and on the big screen with 1980s titles like 'El disputado voto del señor Cayo' and 'Jarrapellejos'.
Alicia, the role of her life
Everything changed in 1995, when she took on the part of Alicia in 'Médico de familia', the series that dominated the ratings through the second half of the decade. Alongside Emilio Aragón, Bosch headlined one of the best loved dramas in recent Spanish television history. The part earned her the Ondas Award for Best Actress in 1999, the most important accolade of her career.
A long and varied career
Rather than resting on that success, Bosch kept landing leading roles. In 2000 she moved into auteur cinema with 'You're the One', a drama by José Luis Garci, and in 2005 she headed the thriller 'Personal Motives'. The following decade kept her busy in some of the most watched series of the moment: 'Grand Hotel' (2013), 'Sin identidad' (2014) and 'La verdad' (2018).
Her versatility became clear when she poked fun at herself in a comic cameo in 'Paquita Salas', and she carried on working in the enduring 'Servir y proteger' (2021) and the series 'Mía es la venganza' (2023). She also tried her hand at horror in the film 'La hermandad' (2013) and threw herself into pure entertainment as a contestant on 'Tu cara me suena'.
Personal life
Her private life has been as eventful as her career. Her relationship with actor Micky Molina, brother of Ángela Molina, produced her daughter Andrea in 1992, and the couple married in 1994. Years later she wed the architect Alberto Martín Caballero, with whom she had twins Ana and Juan in 2003, before divorcing in 2009 after a difficult and highly publicised process.
In 2020 she spoke openly about a basal cell skin carcinoma she had been diagnosed with, the result of years of sun exposure, playing down the scare while urging others to take prevention seriously. Today, with three grown children and a smile that has become her trademark, Lydia Bosch remains one of the grand ladies of Spanish television.
