Few pop culture figures have enjoyed a second act as celebrated as Pamela Anderson's. The most famous lifeguard of the nineties, trapped for decades inside her own image, has reinvented herself past fifty as a critically acclaimed actress, author and activist. She was born on 1 July 1967 in Ladysmith, a small town in British Columbia, Canada, to a working class family.

Discovered on a stadium screen

Her discovery is the stuff of legend: in 1989, a stadium camera picked her out of the crowd at a BC Lions football game and the whole ground cheered. That moment earned her a beer advertising campaign and, soon after, a call from Playboy, which put her on the cover in October 1989 and made her a playmate in February 1990. To this day she holds the record for most covers of the magazine.

Television followed at once. After a small part on the sitcom 'Home Improvement', in 1992 she pulled on the red swimsuit of C.J. Parker in 'Baywatch', alongside David Hasselhoff. Five seasons on the most watched series on the planet turned her into one of the great sex symbols of the twentieth century.

On the big screen she led the comic book adaptation 'Barb Wire' (1996), headlined the action series 'V.I.P.' for four seasons and popped up in comedies and cameos such as 'Scooby-Doo' (2002), 'Scary Movie 3' (2003) and 'Borat' (2006), later appearing in the film reboot 'Baywatch' (2017).

Tommy Lee and the price of fame

In 1995 she married Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee just four days after meeting him. They had two sons, Brandon (1996) and Dylan (1997), and endured one of the murkiest episodes of the tabloid era: an intimate video stolen from their home spread without their consent until it became a worldwide phenomenon. The marriage ended in 1998.

Decades later, the series 'Pam & Tommy' (2022), with Lily James as Pamela, reopened that wound: it was made without consulting her and she has never endorsed it.
