Biography

Few actors get to embody a figure as colossal as Superman before they have even made a name for themselves. Tom Welling did exactly that, and for a decade he was the face of a young Clark Kent for an entire generation of viewers. He was born on 26 April 1977 in Putnam Valley, a small town in New York State, and grew up moving from place to place because of his father's job as an executive at General Motors, until the family finally settled in Michigan. As a teenager he was a passionate sportsman, above all as a football goalkeeper, and after high school he earned his living in construction. Everything changed in 1997, when a talent scout spotted him by chance and he ended up modelling for brands such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. Modelling was merely the prelude to what was coming: in 2000 he made the definitive leap into acting.

Clark Kent, the role of a decade

The part that would change everything arrived in 2001 with 'Smallville', the series that reimagined Superman's younger years in the Kansas town where he was raised. Welling played Clark Kent across ten seasons, all the way to 2011, becoming one of the most recognisable faces on television during those years. His bond with the show grew so close that he moved from actor to creator, directing several episodes and serving as executive producer on its final runs. Although the series kept him busy for much of the year, he still found room for the big screen, making his film debut alongside Steve Martin in the family comedy 'Cheaper by the Dozen' (2003), which led to a sequel in 'Cheaper by the Dozen 2' (2005). That same year he also starred in the horror remake 'The Fog'.

New directions after the cape

Once Smallville came to an end, Welling looked for roles that would take him out of Superman's shadow. On the big screen he appeared in 'Parkland' (2013), an ensemble drama about the hours following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, in which he played a Secret Service agent, and he shared the screen with Kevin Costner in 'Draft Day' (2014), set amid the workings of the NFL draft. In 2016 he took a role in 'The Choice', an adaptation of a novel by Nicholas Sparks.

Television, though, remained his most fertile ground. In the third season of 'Lucifer' (2017) he made a strong impression as Lieutenant Marcus Pierce, a villain with a hidden identity that gave the plot a memorable twist. Two years later he slipped back into Clark Kent's suit for the 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' crossover, within the series 'Batwoman', to the delight of longtime Smallville fans. He later starred in and produced the action series 'Professionals' (2020) and played Samuel Campbell in 'The Winchesters' (2022), the prequel to the veteran 'Supernatural'.

A quiet life away from the set

Away from the screen, Welling has always guarded his privacy. He was married to Jamie White from 2002 to 2015, when their divorce was finalised. He soon began a new chapter with Jessica Rose Lee, a horsewoman and entrepreneur who founded the Saddle Club brand, marrying her on 30 November 2019 at a California vineyard. The couple have two sons, born in 2019 and 2021. Far from the relentless pace of his Superman years, Welling now divides his time between the occasional project and a family life he prefers to keep well away from the spotlight.
