Plot

At the beginning of the thirteenth century Norway faces a bloody civil war. When King Haakon III dies without known descendants in 1204, the wounds between birkebeiner and bagler reopen and begin to happen disputes. That's when a concubine named Inga Varteig ensures that the late king had had an illegitimate offspring with her just before she died. That boy of just thirteen, called Håkon Håkonsson finally came to the throne and was king of Norway from 1217 to 1263, being dubbed as Haakon IV of Norway. During his early years as the highest authority half the kingdom wanted him dead, but the protagonist resist to star a story that changed the course of the Scandinavian country forever. Directed by Nils Gaup.

Recreation of the Art

One of the publicity stills from the movie, which is shown on the back of the disc case and in the disc menu, is a recreation of the famous painting Birkebeinerne på Ski over Fjeldet med Kongsbarnet by Knud Bergslien. This painting is now housed in the Holmenkollen Ski Museum in Oslo.
