Fire of Love

Directed by expert documentary filmmaker Sara Dosa, 'Fire of Love' was presented at the Sundance Festival, where it won the Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award. Such was its reception, that in the United States there was a real fight for obtaining distribution rights, with National Geographic and Neon winning the battle against Netflix, Amazon Studios, Sony Pictures Classics, IFC Films, Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures. It was screened at South by Southwest in 2022.

Katia was a geochemist and Maurice a geologist. Etna and Stromboli, the referents of it. Together they shared an exciting life, a volcanic and playful love lived to the limit. In the 1970s they began a joint search that would last two decades and would take them around the world to study the eruption of volcanoes. Zaire, Hawaii, Indonesia, the United States, Japan... Maurice filmed in 16mm and Katia took photos of the craters on foot. Similar images had never been seen.

Using 200 hours of unpublished archive material and the personal notes and writings of Katia and Maurice, artist Miranda July narrates the fascinating universe of these two unclassifiable volcanologists. The exceptional archive material reveals an epic love story between two explorers who gave their lives to the pioneering study of volcanoes.
