A Hero

Asghar Farhadi's ninth feature film, who returns to his native Iran after his Spanish experience in 'Everybody Knows'. The film was shown in the Official Selection of the 74th Cannes International Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize, jointly with the Finnish 'Compartiment No. 6'. It also participated in the Official Section of the 66th Valladolid Film Festival.

Rahim Soltani (Amir Jadidi) is in prison for non-payment of a debt to his ex-brother-in-law, Bahram (Mohsen Tanabandeh). Rahim gets a permit to get out of prison for two days for good behavior. His goal is to pay off the 150,000,000 tomans he owes. Rahim has a plan, as his lover, Farkondeh (Sahar Goldoost), found a lost bag containing several gold coins. The plan is to sell these coins and thus pay off half of the debt.

However, nothing goes as Rahim and Farkondeh planned. The price of gold has fallen, so they will not have enough money to cover half of the debt, an essential requirement for Bahram to withdraw the complaint and Rahim to be released from prison. Things get complicated when Malileh (Maryam Shahdaei), Rahim's sister, finds the bag and prompts Rahim to return it. Fearful that his sentence will be lengthened, Rahim leaves announcements for the bag to be returned. Considered a gesture of goodwill, his action will be seen as something exceptional, becoming an unexpected hero. This will cause a series of events with unexpected consequences.

'A Hero' was awarded for Best Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film by the National Board of Review, 'A Hero' was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and for the Critics' Choice Award in the same category.
