Plot

'Husbands and Wives' is an American drama and comedy film written, directed, and starring Woody Allen. The film premiered on September 18, 1992, shortly after the (emotional and professional) breakup between Allen and Mia Farrow. Therefore, the film is the last collaboration between the two after 13 movies together. Despite being a box office failure and not recovering its $20 million budget, 'Husbands and Wives' was a critical success and received two nominations for the Academy Awards.

It follows two middle-aged couples in New York. On one side, we have Gabe and Judy - played by Allen and Farrow - and on the other, Sally and Jack - Judy Davis and Sydney Pollack. The story begins when, during a dinner among the four, Jack and Sally visit their friends to announce their separation. They did not expect this and take it almost personally.

Shortly after, Jack starts dating a new girlfriend, a young aerobics instructor who is not well-liked by his friends. Sally also begins a relationship with Michael, a coworker of Judy's. Meanwhile, the relationship between Gabe and Judy is cooling down. The film follows the romantic evolution of these two couples as they self-destruct while experimenting with infidelity.

The main cast of 'Husbands and Wives' is completed by Juliette Lewis, Liam Neeson, Lysette Anthony, and Cristi Conaway. Chosen in 2016 as one of the 5 best Woody Allen films by Time Out magazine, Judy Davis was the most awarded in a film that passed without much notice at the box office.
