Plot
Nobody understands why Sobata Kasumi doesn't feel lonely. She is 30 years old and has moved back in with her parents and grandmother after giving up her dream of becoming a professional cellist. And to top it off, she is working at a boring call center.
Kasumi's mother is desperate to marry her off, but she has no interest in marriage; in fact, she isn't interested in any kind of romance at all. One day, after reconnecting with an old friend, Kasumi will find the strength to face the truth about how she wants to live her life.
'I Am What I Am' is a human drama with a very modern theme: that there are other ways to live fully and freely if we stop taking for granted the conservative values and views on love dictated by society. The film, the third production by (not) HEROINE movies, discusses aromanticism, an orientation characterized by experiencing little or no romantic attraction in a predominantly amatonormative world that assumes everyone thrives only if they are in a romantic relationship.
'I Am What I Am' is directed by Shinya Tamada while the script is written by Atsushi Asada. The film stars Tôko Miura as Kasumi 'Sobakasu' Sobata, Atsuko Maeda as her friend Maho Yonags; Marika Itô as Mutsumi Shinohara, Kasumi's younger sister, and Maki Sakai as Natsumi Sobata, her mother.
