Plot

'Lovers of the Artic Circle' is a Spanish drama movie written and directed by Julio Medem. The film, released in 1998, starrs Najwa Nimri and Fele Martinez, and won two Goya Awards in his thirteenth edition.

The movie depicts the love story between two characters, Otto and Ana, since they meet for the first time when they were eight years old. Otto runs behind his ball, meanwhile Ana has just lost her father. Simultaneously, Ana's mother falls in love of Otto's father and end up marrying. And, although Ana and Otto are now step-brothers, they too end up falling in love with each other keeping their affair a secret.

However, a tragedy sets them apart in life, and Ana moves to Rovaniemi, Finland, meanwhile Otto becomes a pilot of aerial courier. The two lovers meet again in Lapland within the Artic Circle, under the midnight sun.

The plot of 'Lovers of the Artic Circle' was inspired by a personal experience of Medem in his teenage years, when he fell in love with a neighbour. The movie was shot in Madrid and Finland, and is the forth in the filmmakers career. He was nominated to the Goya Award to Best Script, and Najwa Nimri to Best Actress, and won two Goya Awards to Best Original Score and Best Editing.
