Madeline's Madeline

Madeline, a teenage actress, manages to get a leading role in a prestigious theatre group. The director is ambitious and pushes her to use her troubled history with her mother in the theatre's work. Madeline begins to take the work extremely seriously, and blurs the lines between reality and performance. An internal struggle ensues, which impacts both on Madeline and the women in her theatre group.

It becomes clear that Madeline is struggling with mental health difficulties and at times it is unclear as to whether the sequence of events is playing out in her imagination or is actually happening. She has a tense relationship with her mother, who appears to be cold and uncaring, and all the emotions that Madeline is suppressing is then released in the theatre.
