Plot
Directed by acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Yôji Yamada, 'Nagasaki: Memories of My Son' is set during the years following the end of World War II in Japan. Nobuko is a middle-aged woman who works as a midwife. Her life is not easy, during the war she lost her husband and her eldest son, both killed in combat. The remaining son, Koji, died a victim of the atomic bomb that fell on the city of Nagasaki. To avoid feeling the pain of having lost the love of her life and her two children, Nobuko works hard and tries not to think. Three years after the tragedy, on August 9, when the anniversary of Koji's death is fulfilled, Koji's ghosts appear to his mother. Nobuko and her son recall the past, making the woman feel happy. However, this causes her to begin to assume the guiltyness of the loss and to make contact with Koji's fiancée, Machiko. Submissioned by Japan to represent it for the 89th Academy Awards.
