No News From God

'No News From God' is a Spanish comedy written and directed by Agustín Díaz Yanes. It is a work specifically written for its two protagonists, Victoria Abril and Penélope Cruz. The film premieres in Spain on November 30, 2001. Despite receiving generally poor reviews, it achieves 11 nominations for the Goya Awards, including best film, best director, and best actress for Victoria Abril. Ultimately, it does not win any of the Goyas it was nominated for.

The degeneration of today's society makes the gates of heaven practically empty, while there is a line to enter hell. When they receive a call for help from a mother in heaven to save her boxer son Manny, they decide to send Lola Nevado to Earth, a singer from a nightclub in heaven. Thus, Lola pretends to be his ex-wife on Earth to help him get back on track and reconcile with his mother, although it won't be easy at all.

When hell finds out what is happening, they send Carmen Ramos to Earth, a lesbian waitress, with the opposite mission of Lola's. So, Carmen pretends to be a cousin and moves into his house. While both are on their earthly mission, Lola and Carmen end up working together in a supermarket, where they begin to form a friendship and will end up joining in the most unexpected way...

Abril plays Lola from heaven, while Cruz brings to life Carmen from hell. The cast is completed by Demián Bichir as Manny, the boxer. Fanny Ardant is Marina, Lola's boss in heaven, and Gael García Bernal is Davenport, Carmen's supervisor in hell. Other participants include Juan Echanove, Emilio Gutiérrez Caba, Elena Anaya, and Elsa Pataky, among others.
