Plot
In a dystopian future, humanity has lost the ability to dream, condemned to live in a reality devoid of imagination and hope. Shu (played by Shu Qi), a woman with the special ability to perceive illusions, is one of the few who can still experience the remnants of dreams that remain in the world. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers an inhuman creature (played by Jackson Yee) that, unlike others, is still capable of dreaming. These dreams, however, are not mere fantasies: they reveal visions of Chinese history, distorted and fragmented, but laden with mysterious meaning.
Shu delves into the dreams of the being, using her ability to decipher the illusions and find the hidden truth in its visions. Over six chapters, each representing one of the five human senses, plus that of the mind, the film immerses itself in a surreal and philosophical journey. Each sense gives Shu a new perspective on the past, present, and future, unveiling invisible connections between the history of China and the human condition.
The film, which had its world premiere in the main competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, won the Prix Spécial for its innovative narrative and its poetic exploration of memory, perception, and identity. Through its sensory and emotional approach, the work raises questions about the impact of history on the collective psyche, as Shu and the creature confront the uncertainty of a world where dreams have been extinguished, but hope still lingers in the shadows of the impossible.
