Plot
‘'The Chronology Of Water'’ is a film adaptation of the novel ‘The Chronology of Water’ by writer Lidia Yuknavitch. Additionally, it is the first feature film directed by actress Kirsten Stewart. For Stewart, the project based on Yuknavitch's memoirs is something “deeply personal.”
In her work, she narrates a story of overcoming as a swimmer who explores a wide range of themes: sexuality, pain, and addiction to drugs.
Lidia Yuknavitch (Imogen Poots) lives a childhood marked by family abuse and the emotional pain that comes with it. The protagonist finds refuge in competitive swimming. In that sport, she truly feels herself; she acquires a kind of identity that provides an escape from her trauma-filled reality.
However, as she progresses, her athletic dreams crumble when she succumbs to addiction to alcohol and drugs. Her vices seem to follow her wherever she goes. She cannot escape. Her life becomes a constant flight from her past and from herself while she tries to find herself.
Thanks to love and motherhood, she is able to escape from what torments her so much. She suffers the effects of extreme grief as a young woman who develops her sexuality, considered by some to be “unconventional.” She does not limit herself; rather, her attraction expands to both men and women.
As she explores her sexuality, she has toxic relationships with men and women, and tries to heal through writing.
A film that navigates between childhood, a poetic and fragmented visual style, motherhood, self-actualization, and redemption. How to reconstruct the pieces of a puzzle that has always been believed to be broken.
