4 means bad luck

The number of the house in which the film is developed is 44, a reference to the original short film Ju-on 4444444444 (1998) and from which the film came out with the same name in 2002. 4 is also a number of bad luck in Japanese culture because that figure in Japanese is specific a homophone for the name of the character of Shi, which means death.
