The Lost Daughter

Based on Elena Ferrante's novel, 'La figlia oscura', the film follows Leda, a university professor who during her vacation becomes obsessed with a young mother named Nina and her daughter while watching them on the beach. Leda begins to be haunted by her memories of her own motherhood. An impulsive act leads Leda to hide the little girl's doll and she ends up moving into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she will have to face once and for all the unconventional decisions she made as a young mother and the consequences that they brought.

This film is Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut. She is also a producer and screenwriter for this film. The cast includes Olivia Colman ('The Crown'), Dakota Johnson ('Fifty Shades Freed'), Jessie Buckley ('Chernobyl') and Peter Sarsgaard ('The Magnificent Seven'). The production is carried out by Pie Films ('The nursery school teacher')

In addition to motherhood, 'The dark daughter' deals with other important issues such as female sexuality, desire or femininity. Elena Ferrante is the pseudonym of a supposed successful Italian writer about whom there is very little information, but who has also signed the novels of 'L'amica geniale' that have their television adaptation on HBO Max.
