The Perfect Date

Brooks Rattigan (Noah Centineo, 'Sierra Burgess is a Loser') is a high school student who dreams of attending Yale, dating his dream girl Shelby Pace (Camila Mendes, 'Riverdale') and changing the world, in that order. The problem is, despite his father's considerable success as a writer and their generally middle-class life, he lacks the funds to go away to such a prestigious institution. To earn some extra money, Brooks begins a business with his best friend Murph (Odiseas Georgiadis, 'Trinkets'), creating an app through which girls pay to choose his personality for an evening, anything from a salsa dancer to a preppy student, and then have him take them out on a 'perfect date'. No-nonense Celia Lieberman (Laura Marano, 'Austin & Ally') has nobody to take her to the school dance, so Brooks promises her cousin that he will stand in as her pretend boyfriend. Yet Celia won't be steamrolled by a charming smile and an amenable personality. She challenges Brooks like nobody has before, and makes him wonder who he is outside of these dating personalities he markets.

'The Perfect Date', based on 'The Stand-In' by Steve Bloom, is one in a series of young adult novels adapted for the screen by Netflix alongside the likes of 'The Kissing Booth' and 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before'. Chris Nelson directs.
