The Secret Agent

In 'The Secret Agent', Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho offers a deeply human and tense political thriller set in Brazil in 1977, during the military dictatorship. The story follows Marcelo (Wagner Moura), a professor and technology researcher whose life changes irreversibly when he is forced to leave everything he knows. After suffering threats and persecution linked to his past, Marcelo returns to his hometown, Recife, hoping to reunite with his son and seek refuge among the carnivals that flood the streets.

But Recife is not the safe haven he expected: beneath the masks and music of the carnival, oppressive forces follow his every move. Marcelo finds himself trapped in a web of surveillance, betrayal, and silent violence, where every decision can have lethal consequences and where the shadows of state repression are everywhere. As he tries to rebuild his life and protect what he loves most, he also confronts the political and social ghosts that still resonate strongly in Brazilian society.

The film combines elements of neo-noir, suspense, and raw historical realism, exploring not only the persecution of an individual but also the complexities of memory, generational trauma, and resistance against an authoritarian regime. The secret agent premiered worldwide at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where it was critically acclaimed and received significant awards, including Best Actor for Moura and Best Director for Mendonça Filho.
