The Woman of Rumour

Hatsuko Umabuchi is a widow that takes over a famous Geisha house in modern day Kyoto. Her daughter Yukiko comes back from Tokyo after his father failed suicide attempt after his lover knows his wife's proffesion. Hatsuko has a small and discrete affair with the young Doctor Matoba, that takes after the Geishas. The Doctor feels attracted to Yukiko, who at first despises him, as well as everything related to the Geisha world. However, the young girl little by little changes her mind. 'The woman of rumour' is one of the greatests classics from Japanese director Kenji Mizoguchi. 'A Geisha', 'Miss Oyu' and 'Ugetsu Monogatari' complete the largest successes of this director long carreer in the arts.
