For ten years, three families live in a three-story building. During all this time, they will have to face different situations that will cause parent-child relationships to falter. On the first floor, live Lucio (Ricardo Scarmacio) and Sara (Elena Lietti), who live with the concern of what happened the night their French daughter got lost with the neighbor who was taking care of her. One floor up, are Monica (Alba Rohrwacher), Giorgio (Adriano Giannini), and her daughter Beatrice. The couple goes through a crisis after the arrival of Giorgio?s brother Roberto. Finally, Andrea (Alessandro Sperduti) lives in the attic with her parents, Dora (Margherita Buy) and Vittorio (Nanni Moretti). The union of the three breaks when Andrea runs over a woman and she dies. He is taken to prison and his father doesn?t want to hear from him.

According to its director, Nanni Moretti: "Each story develops as a film in itself, before intertwining with each other. In the continuous shift from one character to another, suspending narration or adding scene transitions was never an option: each scene is fundamental".
