New meeting

This is the second collaboration between Jon Hamm and Lewis Pullman since 'Bad Times in the Royale'.

An age thing

Tom Cruise will be 57, at the time of the film's June 2020 release. He was 24 during the first film's release, which will be 33 years older when it's sequel releases.

Older than Viper

Tom Cruise is now older in real life than Tom Skerritt's Viper was in the original Top Gun (1986).

Original release date

The original release date of July 12th, 2019, was pushed back to June 26th, 2020 due to extensive visual effects and complicated flight scenes.

Miles Teller

Miles Teller was cast in the role of Goose's son, beating out the likes of Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell. All three were flown to the home of Tom Cruise, the star of the film, for chemistry tests. Powell was later cast in the film in a role beefed up for him, having impressed Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, as well as executives at Paramount Pictures and Skydance with his auditions.

From sequel to sequel

This marks the third time Tom Cruise has appeared in a sequel to his earlier film, following 'Mission: Impossible' and 'Jack Reacher'.

An doubtful appearance

It was unknown if Val Kilmer was going to be in the movie due to his battle with throat cancer.

Tony Scott

The original film's director, Tony Scott, had 'Top Gun: Maverick' among his projects, but a day before his scheduled meeting with Tom Cruise, he committed suicide, leaving the project unknown in its development status.
