Werwulf

‘'Werwulf'’ is a film by director Robert Eggers. A horror film set in 13th century England and about dark and supernatural themes such as werewolves.

13th century England is a dark place. Fog sweeps through the city streets and whispers echo through the walls of the passageways. Myths and superstitions are heard from one corner to another of the city. The fear of the night and the fear of the unknown are the authors of the most fantastical stories possible.

The medieval context is filled with an ancestral creature: a primitive incarnation of the wolf-man. This creature moves stealthily and creates terror wherever it goes, becoming a nightmare both at night and during the day. It begins to hunt in forests and villages.

The hybrid creature is portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who embodies the feeling of dread. Its nature challenges what is known and deemed natural. A crossing between a human and a beast. What is real and what should we fear? Fear and distrust become daily rituals.

A work that explains explicit horror, alongside the classic themes of the author's cinema such as superstition, guilt, identity, and paranoia. All intensified by the oppressive and gloomy atmosphere that compresses those sensations until they become uncontrollable and explode throughout the plot.

According to Eggers, this work is “the darkest thing he has ever written.” Violence, visceral horror, and raw realism will flood the screen, stripping away all the light it contains.
